Swerve & SYG | Pay Day: No Idea (Swerve) prod. DJ Mentos (2012 Audio)

As we near tax deadlines and recover from holiday spending, we all have our eyes fixed on pay day. Swerve & SYG let us know that they are right there with us with their new series titled Pay Day. Swerve will be putting out tracks on the first and SYG on the fifteenth of each month, giving you something other than $ to look forward to to help you get through the grind every two weeks. Swerve puts rhymes as heavy as the weight of economic stress atop a melodramatic jazzy beat by long time collaborator DJ Mentos, an excellent intro to an album dedicated to getting from the first to the fifteenth and back to the first again. Be encouraged knowing that we are all in this together. Listen. Enjoy. Share.

Peace and Love,

NathanAnthony

S.A.C. Quarterly | Volume 2 | Fall 2012

Click the image above to load the entire newsletter .pdf

It is with a truly satisfying sense of accomplishment and growth with which SAC presents its second quarterly (does that make it a bi-annual?) for 2012. We have grown from roughly 2,500 hits in 2011 to 12,000 hits in 2012, we have seen our writers contribute to GoodVibeSD.com and TRUE Magazine, we have added five or six intern bloggers for 2013 (which will mean we actually begin to cover a good percent of our submissions – I still have over 400 in my inbox to go through from 2012) and the SoulAnchorCollective label became an official business as well. All thanks to God’s grace through our readers and a growing queue of talented and skilled artists and PR companies, eager to pay respect to, grow and improve hip hop music and culture.

SAC would like to thank the following people/entities for a beautiful 2012:

God, our wives/husbands, children, bf’s/gf’s, friends and family for all of the loving support. Swerve & SYG | I Have Love prod. Heikki Hoo (2012 Audio)

images[10]

I have a soft place in my heart for anything that has to do with whiskey and Swerve & SYG don’t disappoint with their second single off of the soon to be available Cold Winters & Warm Whiskey.  Piano and smooth bass puts you in a mahogany and smoke filled bar, while well placed lyricism warms the soul.  Bluesy hip hop that makes you feel good with just enough grimy wordplay to let you know this is grown man business – the business of life and finding a definition for the words love and hate and trying to see love through to the end.  While samples and vocal overlays verge on overdone they are just enough to keep you intrigued. Nowadays it’s easy to get your hands on good music, but a great product is an investment so feel free to support the art by donating as much as you can to their project – you can click on the album art to navigate to Swerve & SYG’s Bandcamp.com site to purchase the track.

Makeshift | Cali (prod. by Makeshift) (2012 Audio)

1874864867-1[1]

SD emcee, producer and all around hip hop renaissance man, Makeshift, recently released Cali, an unorthodox approach to a song dedicated to the west coast’s hip hop epicenter. This release is timely as it would be a perfect travel companion during a rainy day in the sunshine state. King Choosey definitely touches on a wide range of trivia associated with Cali, but is sure to make sure that our staples are covered: sun drenched palm trees, weed and women. This track is a precursor to his forthcoming Left Field LP and happens to be a track that just didn’t make the cut for one reason or another, but Cali is most definitely representative of the quality and authenticity of Makeshift’s music, both as a producer and an emcee.

Swerve & SYG | Love, Loss, Interlude.. prod. D-Rock (2012 Audio)

images[10]

Swerve & SYG prep their fans for Cold Winters & Warm Whiskey 2 with  Love, Loss, Interlude.. and it goes down smooth.  Swerve opens up with some metaphysical rhymes about life and art in which he bares his soul.  Then on the chorus the duo allows the listener sit in the uncomfortable tension created by questions of whether or not success will be achieved, even after all of the hard work.  SYG then touches on similar subject matter – the difficulties that are all too common to the blue collar artist who sits in the no man’s land between commercial success and obscurity.  Stay tuned for the release of Cold Winters & Warm Whiskey 2; the aging process is nearing an end and the contents of the barrel is guaranteed to warm the soul of the hip hop connoisseur through the coldest of winters.

Transit | Settled Smoke feat. Grieves (prod. Grieves) (2012 Audio)

Transit has a unique voice and he shares it atop Grieves’ production, which definitely has Grieves’ signature sound all over it, but also subtly shows the growth of Mr. Modest as a producer, at least partly due to spending so much time with genius producer Budo.  The marriage of Transit’s rhymes and Grieves’ production makes complete sense as Transit sits comfortably among those in the emo-rap sub-genre ruled by Grieves.  This track is the single released off of Transit’s to-be-released Stale, and if this track can be used a gauge for the rest of the album, then SAC would recommend our readers check out Stale when it’s made available.  Listen.  Enjoy.  Share.

TxE hit us with some feel good music that pays homage to early 90ʼs hip hop, “Swing
Set” just makes you nod your head. Lyrically enjoyable, the single opens the door that
the free downloadable “Tetherball EP” jumps through. The EP transports you to summer
days listening to your favorite records and holds it down with poignant and entertaining
lyricism. Stay tuned for more good stuff from TxE I have a feeling this is just the
beginning.

Rav.P & Swerve | No Lifeguard on Duty prod. by D-Rock (2012 Audio)

Swerve’s very distinct voice is a breath of fresh air every time I hear it.  Rav.P’s is the perfect compliment to such.  D-Rock’s piano sample and boom-bap drums conjure the Golden Era and provide a golden platter atop which sit the perfect rhymes of life’s imperfections from both emcees.  This track is telling of what is to come on the Weed and Wine EP which is due to be released soon.  Listen.  Enjoy.  Share.

Blame One | Run It prod. by Coper (2012 Audio)

Blame One is just bread n butter dope.  He’s “been at it for a long while” and in circles who know what’s what, he’s “runnin’ the show”.  Here he goes in on a dope beat by Coper and shows his versatility content wise, cadence wise, breath control wise, and breathes the essence of an emcee into the mic.  Stay tuned, I know he is preparing to drop some projects early in 2013!  Listen.  Enjoy.  Share.

Peace and Love,
