There is something special about this young man, Phora, from Anaheim, CA. There have been a handful of accidental, stumbled-upon connections I have made through SAC that make all of the 3am nights writing feel worth it, and Swerve is definitely in that small circle of emcees, emcees who make me want to work harder, as a writer, as a promoter, as an emcee and as a man.
Many have told me that such assertions in my jottings about music that means something to me is too forward, unprofessional, but I figure I Might, As, Well… do what comes naturally as one who aims to share music that touches me on a deep level with my readers, my friends.
Swerve‘s sincere, heavy-hearted, unmistakable flow is as potent as ever and serves him well as the emcee shares a broad-stroked image of his past present and future. The interwoven stories of the man and the artist are distinct, yet absolutely one. Swerve is showing signs of a remarkable amount of maturation and growth as a person and as an artist, and if he stays the course, I can’t help but expect to see him making moves like his NorCal family, Fashawn. That reminds me, that Blu (Fash‘s label-mate) was featured on Sk! H!, another Swerve track produced by D-Rock; check it out HERE.

Aaron Evans, whose We All Work video recently went viral on YouTube, releases the first two videos (of 6) off of his Becoming a King project. Aaron creates visuals that clearly depict the content in the lyrics in both Final Days and Roar, showing his transformation from human to lion, from commoner to king. The ambient, transitional, minimally percussive musical landscape of Final Days provides the perfect cocoon for the artist’s transition to take place within. The energy is very different from the first sound heard on Roar all the way through to ripping down of the frame found in each video. Evans’ vocal intensity goes from cool and confident to hungry, fittingly as he becomes the king, now ready to defend what is his. Conceptually Aaron Evans is forward thinking and these first two videos leave us excited to see four through six.

This video is like The Brothers Grimm meets Where the Wild Things Are meets the mind of Grieves. Soulspazm Records drops another gem on their Soundcloud page – Blame One & J57’s How Much Time’s Left feat. Akie Bermiss. This emcee/producer super-duo is releasing nothing other than feel-good, soul-stirring hip hop that anyone can enjoy. I pray that one day the youth see the wisdom at their disposal in the words and music of hip hop elders like Blame One and J57 – grown man music here. This track sits right in the pocket of the other two Walk in the Sun singles released so far and is another real life glimpse into the mind of Blame, with an emphasis on the concept of time – a few focused listens is time well spent, both the lyrics and the beautiful soundscape provided by J57.
